Introduction to the report
The year 2024 witnessed an alarming increase in cyberattacks with greater scale and sophistication. As a pioneer in Infrastructure, Transmission, and Cybersecurity, VNETWORK JSC has compiled a statistical report derived from the VNIS security system for the year 2024.
VNIS, VNETWORK's Anti-DDoS Layer 3/4/7 security system, successfully detected and mitigated over 360,000 DDoS attacks—a 20% increase compared to 2023—safeguarding Vietnamese businesses against increasingly complex threats.
Through this report, we aim to provide a comprehensive perspective on the trends and characteristics of DDoS attacks while sharing practical technological insights to strengthen businesses' defenses against the unpredictable waves of attacks prevalent today.
Highlights of the report
- 360,000 - Total DDoS attacks on businesses this year
The number of DDoS attacks on businesses in 2024 increased by 72,000, marking a 20% rise compared to 2023. The rapid acceleration of digital transformation in various industries has made many businesses prime targets. Additionally, the proliferation of "DDoS-for-Hire" services, with prices starting as low as $10–$20, has contributed to this rise.
- 1.7 Tbps - Largest attack scale this year
The largest attack in 2024 peaked at 1.7 Tbps, among more than 50 attacks exceeding the 1.1 Tbps threshold. The use of botnets (networks of devices/computers infected with malware and controlled by hackers) and their new variants has enabled attacks on a larger scale. The prevalence of unsecured IoT devices, numbering in the billions, serves as the primary power source for these malicious botnets.
- 37% - DNS attack ratio is the highest percentage
DNS Amplification accounted for 37% of all Layer 3/4 network attacks, making it the most common attack type. DNS is a protocol prone to exploitation due to its amplification factor of 28–54 times, and public DNS services (like Google DNS) that do not require authentication. This allows attackers to generate massive traffic using minimal resources.
- 26% - Financial and securities sector targeted the most
The financial and securities sector accounted for 26% of all DDoS attacks in 2024, making it the most targeted sector. This industry is particularly vulnerable due to high transaction values and the need for continuous uptime. Stock trading systems are often targeted to cause disruption or diminish investor confidence.
- 28% - Increase in ransom DDoS (Ransom DDoS) attacks
Ransom DDoS attacks increased by 28% compared to 2023, with increasingly sophisticated methods. The combination of data encryption capabilities and DDoS attacks allows attackers to enhance their chances of success, while exerting significant pressure on victims to pay the ransom. In addition, the report includes two case studies detailing the impact of DDoS attacks on enterprise systems and demonstrates how VNIS effectively prevents and protects systems in a timely manner.
